Hill sign
A steep downgrade ahead. Check your speed and be ready to use a lower gear.
MUTCD designation W7-1. See the federal MUTCD, page 207.
How to read signs like this
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.
Practice question
What does this sign warn you to be ready for?
- A Trucks may be crossing the road ahead
- B Slippery pavement when the road is wet
- C A steep downgrade, so check your speed and gear
- D An emergency escape ramp for trucks whose brakes fail
Show answer
C. A steep downgrade, so check your speed and gear
The truck on a slope warns of a downgrade long or steep enough to need special care. Slow before you start down and use a lower gear so you are not riding the brakes. Plaques may give the percent grade or the length of the hill.
