Bridge ices before road sign
Bridges freeze before other road surfaces. Slow down in cold weather.
MUTCD designation W8-13. See the federal MUTCD, page 215.
How to read signs like this
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds. They tell you about a hazard or change ahead (curves, intersections, merges, slippery roads) so you can slow down before you get there.
Practice question
When is the warning on this sign most important?
- A Whenever the bridge has only one lane
- B During hot weather, when the joints in the bridge expand
- C In cold weather, when the bridge may ice before the road
- D When heavy trucks are using the bridge
Show answer
C. In cold weather, when the bridge may ice before the road
This sign warns of a winter hazard: a bridge deck can be icy while the road leading to it is not. Because the message matters only in cold weather, it may be removed or covered in other seasons. Slow down and avoid sudden steering or braking on bridges in cold weather.
