Sample questions
On a Texas public highway, which of these riders must hold a Class M license?
- A Riders of motorcycles, three-wheelers, motor-driven cycles and mopeds
- B Only riders of motorcycles with engines larger than 250cc
- C Only riders of two-wheel motorcycles, since mopeds need just a Class C
- D Only riders of two-wheel motorcycles who plan to carry a passenger on public roads
Show answer
A. Riders of motorcycles, three-wheelers, motor-driven cycles and mopeds
Texas requires a Class M license for anyone operating a motorcycle on a public highway, and the rule also covers three-wheel motorcycles, motor-driven cycles and mopeds. Small engines and extra wheels do not create an exception.
Why should you not be afraid to use the front brake? It can provide at least what share of your total stopping power?
- A About one-third
- B About 40%
- C About half
- D At least 70%
Show answer
D. At least 70%
The front brake is more powerful and can provide at least 70% of your total stopping power, because weight shifts forward onto the front tire as you slow. It is safe when used properly, so use both brakes every time you slow or stop.
Texas law requires right turns to be made as close as practicable to the right curb or edge. According to the Texas manual, which lane position obeys this law while still protecting your lane?
- A Motorcycles are exempt from the right-turn rule
- B By riding to the right of center of the lane
- C By riding in the left third so drivers can see you
- D On the shoulder, to the right of the lane
Show answer
B. By riding to the right of center of the lane
Texas law requires the approach to a right turn and the turn itself to be made as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge. A motorcycle right of center in its lane complies while still protecting its lane position from drivers who might squeeze by.
You need to swerve around an obstacle and also slow down. When should you brake?
- A Only during the swerve, using the rear brake
- B Never; braking should be avoided entirely
- C During the swerve, to slow as early as possible
- D Before or after the swerve, never during it
Show answer
D. Before or after the swerve, never during it
A swerve uses your tires' traction to change direction quickly, so braking at the same time can make them skid. Brake before or after a swerve, never while swerving.
