When entering a freeway from an on-ramp, who has the right-of-way?
- A You, because you are merging
- B Whichever vehicle is larger
- C Whichever vehicle is faster
- D Vehicles already on the freeway
Show answer
D. Vehicles already on the freeway
Yield to vehicles already on the highway. Use the speed change lane, signal left, and when clear, speed up to merge with the flow of traffic.
Exit signs on highways are usually placed how far ahead of the exit?
- A About 100 feet
- B At least 1,000 yards
- C About 300 yards
- D At least 5 miles
Show answer
B. At least 1,000 yards
Exit signs are usually placed at least 1,000 yards ahead, so move into the exit lane well in advance. The heavier the traffic, the earlier you should move over.
You do not feel comfortable driving at the freeway's posted minimum speed. What does the Texas handbook advise?
- A Drive on the shoulder at a slower speed
- B Do not use that highway
- C Turn on hazard lights and drive below the minimum
- D Use the left lane so others can pass on the right
Show answer
B. Do not use that highway
If you cannot or do not want to drive at or above the minimum speed limit, do not use the highway. Plan another route instead.
When should you slow down to exit a freeway?
- A In the main lanes, well before the exit
- B After you reach the bottom of the ramp
- C You should not slow down until you stop
- D On the exit ramp, so you are at the new lower limit by its end
Show answer
D. On the exit ramp, so you are at the new lower limit by its end
Move into the proper lane well before the exit, then slow down on the exit ramp. By the time you are off the highway you should be within the new, slower speed limit.
