    • A The area between solid white lines where a ramp lane joins or leaves the highway; you may not cross or drive in it
    • B A shoulder area you may use to stop for a short break
    • C A paved extra lane you may use to pass slow traffic

    Show answer

    A. The area between solid white lines where a ramp lane joins or leaves the highway; you may not cross or drive in it

The gore area lies between the solid white lines that separate a traffic lane from an entrance or exit lane, or where two highways merge or split. It is against the law to cross over or drive in it.

  2. On I-15, a double white line separates the express (carpool) lane from the general lanes. Where may you move into or out of the express lane?

    • A Only at access points marked with white dotted striping
    • B Anywhere, as long as you signal for two seconds
    • C Only at the start or end of the freeway
    • D Anywhere the double line is broken by an exit ramp
    Show answer

    A. Only at access points marked with white dotted striping

It is illegal to cross a double white line. You may enter or leave the express lane only at access points with white dotted striping, which are about 3,000 feet long and located at nearly every interchange.

  3. You come to a flex lane with signals above it. What does a red X over the lane mean?

    • A You may use the lane only to turn left
    • B You may use the lane after slowing down
    • C The lane is open to carpools only
    • D You cannot use that lane
    Show answer

    D. You cannot use that lane

Flex lanes can carry traffic in one direction at some times and the other direction at other times. A green arrow over the lane means you may use it, and a red X means you may not.

  4. At a stop sign where no crosswalk or stop line is marked, where must you stop?

    • C Wherever you can see best, even past the sign
    • D Before the intersection or the stop sign
    Show answer

    D. Before the intersection or the stop sign

Stop behind the stop line or crosswalk when one is marked. If there are no markings, stop before the intersection or stop sign. You must also yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk, even an unmarked one.
