Sample emergencies & crashes questions
A front tire blows out at highway speed. What is the most important thing to do first?
- A Steer quickly onto the shoulder
- B Shift into neutral and turn off the engine
- C Hold the wheel firmly and do not slam on the brakes
- D Brake hard to stop as quickly as possible
Show answer
C. Hold the wheel firmly and do not slam on the brakes
During a blowout, don't panic and don't slam on the brakes. Hold the wheel firmly and keep the car in its lane, let it slow to around 30 mph, then brake gently and pull off the road.
Your gas pedal sticks while you are driving. What should you do first?
- A Pull the parking brake as hard as you can
- B Shift into neutral
- C Turn the ignition key to lock
- D Pump the gas pedal hard
Show answer
B. Shift into neutral
If the gas pedal sticks, keep your eyes on the road and shift into neutral first. Then try to free the pedal, turn off the ignition without locking the steering, brake and pull off the road.
Your right wheels drop off the pavement onto a shoulder that is much lower than the road. What should you do?
- A Jerk the wheel back onto the road right away
- B Speed up and steer back at a shallow angle
- C Brake hard while turning back onto the road
- D Slow to about 10 mph, check traffic, then turn sharply back on
Show answer
D. Slow to about 10 mph, check traffic, then turn sharply back on
Do not try to steer back right away. Slow down gently on the shoulder; if there is a big drop-off, slow to about 10 mph, look for traffic both ways, and then turn your wheels sharply back onto the pavement.
Your brakes fail while driving. What should you NOT do?
- A Take your foot off the gas pedal
- B Put on the parking brake suddenly
- C Steer toward the right lane and shoulder
- D Shift into a lower gear
Show answer
B. Put on the parking brake suddenly
If your brakes fail, do not put on the parking brake suddenly, because you could lose control. Take your foot off the gas, shift to a lower gear, work toward the shoulder, and then apply the hand brake gradually.
