Sample pavement markings questions
What does the color of a pavement line tell you about traffic on either side of it?
- A White separates the same direction; yellow separates opposite directions
- B Yellow separates the same direction; white separates opposite directions
- C White marks city streets; yellow marks rural highways
- D White lines may be crossed; yellow lines may never be crossed
Show answer
A. White separates the same direction; yellow separates opposite directions
White lines separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction, and yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions. If you see a yellow line on your left, oncoming traffic is on the other side.

- A Whenever you need to pass a slower vehicle
- B Only to turn left into or from an alley, private road or driveway
- C Only when passing a bicyclist at under 25 mph
- D Never, under any circumstances

On a two-lane road, the center has a solid yellow line on your side and a broken yellow line on the oncoming side. May you pass?
- A No, the solid line is on your side
- B Yes, if the way ahead is clear
- C Yes, but only during daylight
- D Yes, if the car ahead is under the limit
Show answer
A. No, the solid line is on your side
The line closest to you is the one that applies to you. A solid yellow line in your lane means you cannot pass, while drivers on the broken-line side may pass when it is clear. These zones are set where sight distance is too short to pass safely.

What does a solid white line between two lanes going the same way indicate?
- A The lanes carry traffic in opposite directions
- B Changing lanes across it is hazardous
- C Passing is encouraged in the left lane
- D The right lane is reserved for buses
Show answer
B. Changing lanes across it is hazardous
Broken lines mean passing or lane changing is allowed if the way is clear. Solid white lines mean changing lanes is hazardous, so stay in your lane unless you must move.
