Sample railroad crossings questions

  1. Lights are flashing at a railroad crossing with more than one track. What must you do?

    • A Slow down and cross if no train is on the near track
    • B Cross quickly before the gates come down
    • C Stop, and cross only when all tracks are clear
    • D Stop, then go as soon as one train passes
    Show answer

    C. Stop, and cross only when all tracks are clear

Flashing red lights mean a train is approaching and you must stop and yield to it. At multiple-track crossings, make sure all tracks are clear before crossing, because a second train can be hidden by the first.

  2. Road sign for this question

What does the white X-shaped crossbuck sign at a railroad crossing require?

    • A Stop every time, even if no train is coming
    • B Nothing; it only marks an old crossing that is no longer in use
    • C Yield to trains; a sign below it shows the number of tracks
    • D Wait for a flagger to wave you across
    Show answer

    C. Yield to trains; a sign below it shows the number of tracks

Crossbuck signs are yield signs: slow down, look and listen, and stop if a train is approaching. When more than one track crosses the road, a sign below the crossbuck tells you how many tracks there are.

  3. Your car stalls on the railroad tracks. What should you do first?

    • A Keep trying to restart the engine
    • B Get everyone out and far away from the tracks
    • C Have passengers stay in while you push the car
    • D Turn on your flashers and wait for help in the car
    Show answer

    B. Get everyone out and far away from the tracks

If your vehicle stalls on a crossing, get everyone out and far away from the tracks immediately. Never try to restart or push the car with passengers inside. Then call 911 to report the emergency.

  4. Traffic is backed up just past a railroad crossing. When may you drive onto the tracks?

    • A Only when you are sure you can clear the far side without stopping
    • B As soon as the car ahead starts moving
    • C Whenever the crossing lights are not flashing
    • D When you can fit at least half the car past the rail
    Show answer

    A. Only when you are sure you can clear the far side without stopping

Never drive onto a highway-rail crossing until you are sure you can clear the tracks on the other side without stopping. A train cannot stop quickly, and a car caught on the tracks has no escape.
